Last May I did a profile of entrepreneur and motivational coach extraordinaire Anthony Robbins (Don’t Try To Be Perfect – Anthony Robbins). I wanted to continue the profile today by sharing a few additional secrets behind the Tony Robbins success story:
“The only thing that’s keeping you from getting what you want is the story you keep telling yourself,” says Robbins. “What we can or cannot do, what we consider possible or impossible, is rarely a function of our true capability. It is more likely a function of our beliefs about who we are.”
Robbins is a firm believer in the power of the mind; the only way to go from good to great is to believe that it is possible. If we believe we are destined for small things, then that is all we will ever achieve. Conversely, if we believe we are destined for greatness, we will settle for nothing less and we will not stop until we have reached that goal.
“I’ve continued to recognize the power individuals have to change virtually anything and everything in their lives in an instant,” says Robbins. “I’ve learned that the resources we need to turn our dreams into reality are within us, merely waiting for the day when we decide to wake up and claim our birthright.”
According to Robbins, the single biggest reason why most people fail to achieve a fulfilling life is because they are stuck in the limits of their own mind; they settle for a quality of life that is below what they desire because they don’t think they can do better or they fear the possibility of failure. But, says Robbins, failing to challenge yourself is the greatest failure of all.
“If you can’t, you must. If you must, you can,” says Robbins. “Let fear be a counselor and not a jailer… Take control of Your consistent emotions and begin to consciously and deliberately reshape Your daily experience of life.”
In his seminars, Robbins challenges his audiences to step up to the plate, today. Because beliefs have the power to both create and destroy, Robbins emphasizes the importance of making that single, crucial decision to change Your life for the better, and to do it now. “Any time you sincerely want to make a change, the first thing you must do is to raise Your standards,” says Robbins. “When people ask me what really changed my life eight years ago, I tell them that absolutely the most important thing was changing what I demanded of myself. I wrote down all the things I would no longer accept in my life, all the things I would no longer tolerate, and all the things that I aspired to becoming.”
For Robbins, the past doesn’t equal the future; any individual has the power to create their ideal life if they just open themselves up to the possibilities that it can happen. “All personal breakthroughs begin with a change in beliefs,” says Robbins. “So how do we change? The most effective way is to get Your brain to associate massive pain to the old belief. You must feel deep in Your gut that not only has this belief cost you pain in the past, but it’s costing you in the present and, ultimately, can only bring you pain in the future. Then you must associate tremendous pleasure to the idea of adopting a new, empowering belief.”
Through this process of immersion, Robbins believes that anyone can re-wire their minds for success. “Put yourself in a state of mind where you say to yourself, ‘Here is an opportunity for you to celebrate like never before, my own power, my own ability to get myself to do whatever is necessary.’”
