How to Lay the Foundation to Start Your Own Business via Online Marketing

Many people have a big misconception that they have to quit their job to start their own business.  In reality, it is perfectly doable to start a new business while you are still working.  I highly recommend that anybody starting their own business gives themselves a year to start getting online exposure before leaping into anything.  Laying down the foundation for online marketing success is most important.  These days, if you are not online, you will struggle to be truly successful.  My site gets hit around 400 times per day (not bad for a niche industry!)  Because of all the traffic we get from our website, we now have so many incoming leads that we can choose which clients we want to work with and which clients we do not.  In this economy, this is not something that many companies have the luxury of.  With that being said, let’s get started.

First, I recommend that you start your own business as opposed to buying a franchise or becoming a reseller.  Subway is not in the business of making you rich.  Yes, some manage to do it.  If it was a foolproof plan, however, everybody would own one.  To avoid having to deal with manufacturers, begin a service type business.  Also, think locally.  When you are just getting started, don’t try to compete on a national level.  Start small and work your way up little by little.  If you take care with each step in the process, a few years down the line you’ll be ready to launch a much larger campaign and your competitors won’t know what hit them.

Lay down the foundation to get ranked highly on Google so your business can last for years to come.  Follow these guidelines to make sure you do it right:

1. Pick a domain name that describes what you do. Do not name your company after your last name. Name it after the product or service.  When I began my firm, I did not know this and it took me a while to get Google’s authority on a particular subject.  Now, my site gets around 400 hits per day, though I feel this could have been achieved far more quickly if I had chosen a domain based on the service I was providing.  Only use .com domains, and shorter names are better than longer ones.  To give you an example of how important this is, Google “NYC Sales Recruiters.”  Look at a company by the name of Sales Expert Executive recruiters.  They have a template based 10 page website.  Then, look at mine.  We have 170 pages of articles written about sales recruiting.  That is how much weight the search engine puts on domain names.   It took me nearly a year to learn how to beat them in most categories.

2. Brand your company for Google. Start out with what are called long-tail keyword phrases.  Long-tail keyword phrases are 5 words.  When I began to learn online marketing, I went after words like “New York City sales recruiters.”  Then, as time progressed, I began going after shorter keywords and the traffic to my site increased.

3. Study how to build backlinks to your website. There are tons of articles out there telling you how to do this.  Building backlinks to your site is very important, and at first, should be done gradually.  Right off the bat, the best way to build links is to submit your website to several website directories.  The main ones are www.business.com and www.dir.yahoo.com.   It’s well worth the money.  Then, begin a blog and frequently update it with posts.  Have HTML links with the keywords you are going after pointing back to your site.  Also, write interesting articles and submit them to online article sites such as Ezine.  Writing is the key to gaining backlinks to your site and is the most important facet of online marketing success. However, when submitting your first articles to these sites, make sure they are perfect.  If you mess up on the first few, the editors will dismiss your subsequent efforts.

4. Keep track of your site’s progress. You should begin to see an increase in website traffic and your Google page rank start to climb.  Make sure people can contact you through the website.  There is no better way to gauge your success with online marketing then how many clients are coming in.

So that’s opening your own business, in a nutshell.  Depending on the industry you choose and the product or service you are selling, you will run in to your own unique problems and obstacles.  Figuring out how to get past them, however, is just part of the fun.

  1. Great tips there Ken, i think aspiring entrepreneurs will find the tips useful.

  2. I completely agree with the part about starting a service business as opposed to just a franchise or MLM. Starting your own business is where the fun AND the money is.

Regarding the tips, it is very important for all entrepreneurs to understand the basics of SEO — search engine optimization. If you plan from the very beginning, great search results can substitute a large advertising budget in order to run a profitable business.

@Steve: Agreed about SEO. Doing it right from the beginning saves you a lot of time and headache in the future. Also, the sooner you begin to build a proper SEO base the better, as your efforts build on top of one another. Great point!

These days, and as a sales recruiter I know, cold-calling is near impossible. This is something which needs to be done. Though, becoming good at SEO takes a lot of time. Anybody can learn SEO, but not many can properly execute it.

For instance, to get .edu links, I have to write articles and distribute them constantly to colleges. They drag you through the mud. However, if you can get them (I think I’m at 7 now), it will solidify your business for success for a long time to come. The unemployment rate is insane now, though because of SEO, we get in 1 to 2 new clients a day. It’s a must.

  5. You hit the nail on the head with this post! I highly agree that it is best to establish you web presence using Google and other major search engines. However there are other effective ways of gaining permanent residual traffic as well…

This is good advice, as it stands, but everybody knows MUCH more is involved, and that it’s a long journey.

One tip that isn’t mentioned above, for example, is stay focussed and do not be tempted by the latest way to make money online. Find your idea, and a way to exploit it that makes it stand out, and then go with it, UNTIL it’s successful or until you need to change something. DON’T be distracted by other opportunities…

    Anyways, good stuff… :-)

@Steve: True, this could have been a 10,000 word post if Ken wanted to list everything it takes. :) Staying focused is definitely something we all can benefit from, whatever stage of business we’re in. Thanks for sharing!

Great article. As a web designer, I meet many business owners who don’t understand the value of really investing the time and effort into SEO. Or sometimes they expect instant results and don’t know why they’re not at the top of the search engines in just 3 or 4 weeks. But the truth is that like anything worth doing, getting your business ranked well in search engines takes time and commitment.

Great tips here Ken! Definitely a recipe for a winning formula. ;-)

I agree, how you choose your domain name can have a huge impact on your business. Ideally, you should include your targeted keyword(s) in it. It’s a bit challenging these days, since most of the .com sites are taken, but it’s worth the effort.

Also, great mention on backlinks. I see so many people frustrated that they hold a bad position in serp’s but I soon find out they have little to no backlinks. It’s a process, but if you focus on the things you mentioned before as well as additional strategies such as creating great content (so others WANT to link to you) and guest blogging, you can start building those backlinks.

Thanks so much for the great post and I’m glad to hear that your biz is thriving. :-)
