Are you tired of the nine to five? Do you want to be your own boss? Do you want to set your own schedule? Work when you want to work not when your boss says you have to work.
You will be able to work only a couple hours a week. More vacations, more time with your family, more time to do what you want to do.
You see the idea being sold everywhere. The idea that owning your own business means you will have a lot of free time.
When someone is selling the dream of owning your own business the imagery used is you sitting on the beach (or walking in a park), sipping martini (or reading a book), running down a field with your hands in the air (or skipping down a path with family and dog). The message is that by owning your own business you have all the time in the world.
I use to own a successful business. And I can tell you by personal experience that the only type of business owners on the beach (or walking in a park)  are those with a failing business. The truth is business owners are the busiest people in the world.
Only Employees Dream About Free Time
Only employees consider free time as a desirable thing.
As an employee you idolize free time. This makes sense because for most employees everyday is a day in prison. You must sit within four walls from 9-5, Monday through Friday. You come home exhausted, you wake up tired. Commute , work, lunch, work, commute, sleep. No time for anything. You want free time. You want time to do the things you want to do.
Every minute that you can get away from work is a golden time — a day pass from the nuthouse. Time to do what you want to do, time to be with the family, time to work on your glass bottle with a little model pirate ship in it.
Every employee wants more free time. Smart marketers sell to this need. They portray business owners as having nothing but time — start your own business and time is yours. Only an employee, who know nothing about what owning a business really means falls for this gimmick. Employees mistakenly believe that if they are their own boss then they would allow themselves a lot of free time.
Business Owners Enjoy Being Busy
When I had my own business I worked weekends. I could go to the beach, I could go for a walk in the part, I could read a book. But I did not want to. All I wanted to do was work.
I am not strange. Most business owners do not have free time — they do not want it.
Business owners work every free minute they have. Not only do they work during business hours, they also work in the shower, at breakfast, while mowing the lawn. They are always working. Their minds are always occupied with their work.
For business owners there is no such thing as free time. Every minute whether consciously or subconscious is consumed by the business. The last thing a business owner wants to do is rest on the beach drink a martini.
They do not think about their business because they have to, they do it because they want to. There is nothing better then working on something that will improve the business.
Are You Working Hard Now, to Have More Free Time Later?
I had a business then I sold it. For the last 3 years I have been an employee.
I want to own a business again.
So like a lot of people I created a website which I hope to turn into a business. For two years I have been working hard to turn it into a profitable business. It is still not making enough money to enable me to quit my job, but I am making progress — slow and steady.
Why do I want to own my own business again? Definitely not for the free time — I am not going to fall for that trick twice. If my website becomes successful I know that I will be busy.
The point is: if you are working hard now sacrificing all your free time in the hopes that when you become a successful business owner you will be sleeping in till noon – you are wrong. Because if your business turns successful you will look back and reminisce for the days you had free time.
Roman Jelinek had his own business and then he sold it. Now he is hoping to start another successful business. Read more about Roman here.
