Interview with Aaron Patzer

Aaron PatzerThis week I have been lucky enough to interview Aaron Patzer.

Aaron Patzer started Mint.com when he was just 25, after becoming frustrated by the amount of time it took him to organize his personal finances using traditional computer-based programs. Launched in September 2007, Mint.com is a free, Web-based money-management tool that automatically culls personal financial data and provides users with an easy-to-digest analysis of their spending habits.

Adam: You have packed a lot of experience into a very short time, what kind of knowledge did you take from your first start-ups into Mint?

Aaron: When I started out, not everyone had heard of the Web, and most of the businesses where I grew up were manufacturing companies who couldn’t see any value in having a website. At this point, I started reverse engineering search engines, doing what would now be known as SEO (search engine optimization) to get ranked under phrases like “web site development”. I picked up most of my clients that way, but actually made more money off providing SEO to others – ultimately it helped me pay my way through college, and taught me a lot about running a business.

Adam: Your interest in computers started at the age of about 6, how did you first get involved and start to build upon these skills?

Aaron: Where shall I begin? I grew up in Evansville Indiana, which doesn’t exactly have a lot of economic opportunity when you’re a teenager. I’d been using computers since I was about 6, ran a bulletin board system (BBS) when I was about 10, and have had email since the late 80s (and I was born in the 80s). When the internet came around, I decided to start the Web development business I mentioned above. So, when I was 16, I taught myself JavaScript & HTML, and started cold calling businesses around town, and an Internet entrepreneur was born.

Adam: How do you get potential clients to make the step from seeing your website to actually signing up with the service?

Aaron: Security -and trust- is obviously a massive issue. The other big factor in building user confidence quickly, which is often done with site design quality. Mint.com has one of the best graphic designers ever (Jason Putorti); he cares about every pixel, all the fonts, all the transparencies and effects. And that shows instantly. People do make judgments of trust on appearance – in the real world and online. The last thing is you really need to back it up! My third hire at Mint.com was our VP of Engineering, David Michaels, who has 15 years of experience in security, including financial Web services.

Adam: You have been extremely successful with Mint, it isn’t your first business though, what advice would you give to young entrepreneurs that haven’t quite found the right product yet?

Aaron: The most important part of any business, product, or invention is that it must solve a real need and a real problem. Observe the world around you – everything you do, and especially everything you hate to do – solve a real problem and the world is yours.

Adam: You started Mint without any funding and then raised finance for the business. How did you solve the problem of raising finance for a website that required potential users enter their bank details?

Aaron: Regarding security, keep in mind Mint.com has a read-only connection to your bank account, so you can’t actually move money around and no one can drain your accounts. We also have bank-level data security, along with low-balance and unusual spending alerts to help you proactively identify fraud or identity theft.
That said, pretty much every investor I went to said we would fail for exactly the reasons you outlined: no one is going to trust an unknown startup with their financial information. It turned out not to be true at all. In our first four months, over 100,000 people entered their financial information into Mint.com, and we’ve had no security breaches at all.

Adam: Mint saw very rapid growth initially, how has the business continued to progress during the economic downturn?

Aaron: We recently announced that we have received $14 million in Series C funding. This funding round was led by DAG Ventures. In total, Mint.com has received more than $30 million in funding since launching in 2007. To be approached with funding in this climate is acknowledgment of our progress and potential in helping Americans to save and do more with their money. Now that we have a sampling of about 2% of the nation’s online households, we can see some interesting economic trends, and are establishing ourselves as a source of close to real-time insights into the US economy.
We’ve also just crossed the 1.5 million user mark, and are the fastest-growing financial software in history.

Adam: Where do you see Mint going over the next five years?

Aaron: My goal for the next five years is to grow Mint.com to tens of millions of customers, and dramatically make them more prosperous in the process.

Adam: Do you have any marketing tips that really helped put Mint.com on the map? What really worked for you?

Aaron: Prior to launch, one thing we did to build buzz was start a very active blog with over 200 articles on personal finance. In order to get into the Mint.com private beta first, you had to put up a little badge on your blog or social network page that said “I want Mint!”. That gave us lots of free advertising, and a bunch of inbound links which improved our ranking in Google – not only was it free, it made those customers feel special when we let them in early.

Adam: Initially with Mint.com you were working about 100 hours per week, have things settled enough now for you to have better work-life balance?

Aaron: Really I just work flat out as long and as hard as I can. I don’t have any rules like “only answer emails twice a day” or anything. The most important thing I can tell you is to set aside an hour or two each week to sit alone in a room with no distractions and just think. Think about your business and your product.

Adam: You took on some pretty big names which the launch of Mint, it must have been quite daunting, how do you overcome the feelings of self-doubt that must go along with this?

Aaron: I was 25 at the time, and basically oscillated day to day between thinking “This is the greatest idea ever!” and “This will never work. Who am I to take on Intuit and Microsoft? If this was a good idea, someone would have done it before.” It’s very emotional, and I don’t think people ever tell you about that. You see your net worth quickly draining, you have no idea what’s going to happen next, and you’re sitting alone in a room with no help, no resources, just your brain and sheer will-power. Whenever I got down, I would listen to “That’s Life” by Frank Sinatra, or think about a Shakespeare quote I liked as a kid: “Our doubts are traitors, and make us lose the good we might oft win, by fearing to attempt.”

Since my interview with Aaron, Intuit Inc. has agreed to buy Mint.com for $170 million. To find out more, click here.

SEO Advice – I Slept Through Class

It’s time for another SEO Advice post! Last week, I offered free SEO advice to PUA Lingo. I’m going to continue my SEO Advice series today by helping out another YoungEntrepreneur.com blog readers, Arik J. Flanders from I Slept Through Class.

Arik J. Flanders - http://www.isleptthroughclass.com/

Hi Evan,

In reference to your SEO Advice blog post, I wanted to submit my site (www.isleptthroughclass.com) to be considered in your featured article. The website is rooted around a college based niche that creates a platform for students to share classroom information in a socialized environment. The site has shown continual growth at more than 900 colleges and universities around the country. We have used a variety of techniques to help boost our SEO including, posting on blog/forums, being featured in many different online school newspapers, submitting all of our press releases and media publications to digg, delicious, stumbleupon, etc. We have also purchased key words through the major search engines and have split tested the ones with the highest conversions. We use many social bookmarking sites, post our viral videos on many of the major shared networks, utilize twitter, facebook, myspace and friendfeed. However, with all of these efforts combined the major search engines are still only our third highest traffic generator.

Therefore, we would really like to hear your opinions, thoughts and advice on how we can better use our resources to help boost our SEO traffic.

Thank you kindly for any and all of your time,

Arik J. Flanders
College Marketing Consultant

My Recommendations

1) Get Some Content

Search engines send visitors to content so you need to make sure you have enough of it on your site. Aside from the blog and a few points in the Answer Board you don’t really have any content that Google can see because you have to have an account to log in. You should write articles on your important keywords like “college class notes” with at least 300-500 words. If you give the search engines the content they are looking for they will reward you with traffic!

2) Target Your Keywords

The title tag of your home page is I Slept Through Class:: college class notes. Take out the I Slept Through Class and put in more relevant keywords. You’re going to rank for I Slept Through Class because it’s your domain name. You want to start ranking for the other keywords that people who haven’t heard of you yet will be searching for. Once you’ve identified the top keywords, put them in your title tags as well as in the content across your site.

3) Be Careful About Link Buying

Watch out with the link buying strategy. It can help give you a short term Page Rank boost but if you do too much of it Google can penalize or even ban your site. The better strategy would be to create valuable content that people will want to link to instead of having to buy the links. Maybe you could release some of your notes for free or put a top 20 list together of the most slept through classes. Think of creative ways to build useful and valuable content and you’ll have all the links you need.

Good luck Arik!

SEO Advice – PUA Lingo

It’s time for another SEO Advice post! Last week, I offered free SEO advice to Duzo Design. I’m going to continue my SEO Advice series today by helping out another YoungEntrepreneur.com blog reader, Casual from PUA Lingo.

Casual - http://www.pualingo.com/

Hey Evan,

I’m the webmaster of PUA Lingo (http://www.pualingo.com/), a glossary site targeted at the pickup and seduction niche.  We’ve tried to apply all the SEO techniques we’ve come across (from great sites like yours), but would appreciate any advice on anything we might be missing.  Thanks!

-Casual

My Recommendations

1) 300 Words Minimum

You have done a pretty good job of your on-site optimization. Your title tags are usually descriptive and you have up to date content through your blog. To give yourself the best chance of ranking for your posts I would suggest making sure each one is at least 300 words (500 words is ideal). For example, your page on Green Pick Up Artist (http://www.pualingo.com/2008/12/green-pickup-artist-gpua/) has very little content on it. Now, you rank #1 in Google for Green Pick Up Artist (GPUA) but you are not #1 for GPUA. Adding more content to all the pages will help you rank higher in Google and for more keywords.

2) Get More Links

You have a lot of content but until you get more links it will be difficult to drive much traffic. Right now your homepage stands at a Page Rank of 2 out of 10. Start a link building campaign to get more people pointing towards your site. This could include related PUA websites, popular bloggers who cover the niche, and any media who are doing stories on it. Getting quality links will help leverage all the content you already have and help it rank more prominently.

3) Use Keywords In Your Title

The title of your blog posts usually impact the title tag of your pages and is therefore the most important part of your on-site optimization efforts. In your blog post The Naturalization of Game both the title tag and the H1 tags are The Naturalization of Game. If you want to get posts like these ranked and leverage the hard work you have done to create the article, choose keywords that people are searching for in your post titles. You can use the Google Keyword Tool to find out which keywords are being used the most and how competitive they are.

Good luck Casual!

SEO Advice – Duzo Design

It’s time for another SEO Advice post! Last week, I offered free SEO advice to AtLargeNutrition. I’m going to continue my SEO Advice series today by helping out another YoungEntrepreneur.com blog reader, Timothy Marshall from Duzo Design.

Timothy Marshall - http://www.duzodesign.com/

Hi there!

I would love for you to give me advice, tips etc on my website’s SEO performance. The site http://www.duzodesign.com. It is for my company, Duzo Design, LLC. It’s a web design company based in Connecticut.

Thanks,
Timothy Marshall
Duzo Design, LLC

My Recommendations

1) Title Tags

The title is one of the most important elements in your onsite SEO. It’s located above where it says http://www.duzodesign.com. Right now your homepage title tag reads Duzo Design, LLC > Innovative Web Design. You already rank at the top of Google for Duzo Design so I would take it out and focus in on Innovative Web Design. You should also talk about Innovative Web Design on your home page – right now you only mention it in a picture. Take the text out of the picture and create content around the key phrase “Innovative web design”.

2) Create More Pages With Text

If you want to rank for your website you should have at least 300 words of content on each page. Right now none of your pages meet this criteria. You should look at how you can increase the word count on your pages as well as add new pages in. For example, you will want to create a page called Innovative-Web-Design.html which is an article that is 300-500 words that talks about how you create innovative web designs. This will then help you rank for that key phrase. Rinse and repeat for the various terms you are trying to rank for.

3) Get More Links

Google’s ranking system is based to a large degree on the incoming links that you have. The more high quality links your site has, the better you will rank. Right now you have very few links and your Google Page Rank is 1 out of 10. Start reaching out to people to build those links (this blog post is a good start) – the more links you can build the better your chances will be of ranking for your keywords!

Good luck Timothy!

SEO Advice – AtLargeNutrition

It’s time for another SEO Advice post! Two weeks ago, I offered free SEO advice to Poker Strategy, Theory, and Tips. I’m going to continue my SEO Advice series today by helping out another YoungEntrepreneur.com blog reader, Daniel from AtLargeNutrition.

Danielhttp://atlargenutrition.com/

hey,

I read your blog regularly and your SEO advice seems solid and straight forward.

I run http://www.atlargenutrition.com/ and I was wondering if you could give me similar advice? I am starting on this business full time in 2 months time and want to really focus on SEO, but I am very rusty and haven’t really bothered about it for a while!

Thanks,

Daniel

My Recommendations

1) Home Page Title Tag

You’ve done a great job of generating links and building Page Rank (now a 4 out of 10) which will increase your ability to rank for different keywords. Your homepage gives you the best chance to rank so you want to put your important keywords in the title tag on the home page. Right now your title tag reads “At Large Nutrition – Your number one choice for nutritional supplements.” You’re going to rank for At Large Nutrition because it’s your domain name so take it out and put your important keywords “nutritional supplements” at the beginning. Right now it’s your most valuable key word sequence and it’s at the end of your sentence. You can also add in a few more keywords that are targeted. Most people don’t ever read the title tags but Google sure does. Also make sure to keep it under 100 characters.

2) Be Consistent in Your SEO

You have some good content on the site which will help drive traffic. You want to make sure that your SEO efforts are being maximized on each page. For example, on your article page http://www.atlargenutrition.com/nitreanprotein_report.php your title tag reads “Why you should choose Nitrean protein over other protein powders!” Then the actual title of your article is “What Makes Nitrean the Best Protein Value on the Market?” and the article URL itself is nitreanprotein_report.php. You should keep all three the same and choose the most strategic keywords for them to give you the best chance of ranking for the selected keywords.

3) Don’t Have the Same Title Tags For Multiple Pages

As mentioned already, your home page title tag reads “At Large Nutrition – Your number one choice for nutritional supplements.” which you are now going to change. I then go to your articles page and guess what it reads? You guessed it: “At Large Nutrition – Your number one choice for nutritional supplements.” Make sure that every page has a unique title tag to give each page the best chance to rank for different keywords.

Good luck Daniel!

SEO Advice – Poker Strategy, Theory, and Tips

It’s time for another SEO Advice post! Last week, I offered free SEO advice to Adventure Mopeds. I’m going to continue my SEO Advice series today by helping out another YoungEntrepreneur.com blog reader, Aaron Tucker from Poker Strategy, Theory, and Tips.

Aaron Tucker – http://jacktenoffsuit.com/

Hi,

I saw your blog post on youngentrepreneur.com. My site is www.jacktenoffsuit.com. I would love if you could help me out!

Thanks,

Aaron Tucker
My Recommendations

1) What’s With The Forward?

Your website is jacktenoffsuit.com but when you enter the url it automatically forwards you to jacktenoffsuit.com/homepage/. If you’re doing it through a 301 redirect then any Page Rank on your main page will automatically forward to the homepage folder but why do it? The closer your keywords are to the left of the url the more it will help your SEO efforts so unless there is a good reason for having the homepage folder, I would eliminate it. If you absolutely have to have it in, at least change it to a keyword that will help you drive traffic like /poker-tips/ instead of /homepage/.

2) Use Your Keywords

Blogs are great for SEO because most blogging platforms automatically optimize many aspects of your site. This takes some of the work away from you but you still have to pick good keywords if you want to drive traffic! The most important place where your keywords should be is in the title of your post. Your recent post Raise ‘em ‘Til They Crack might be descriptive of the content you have in the post but it’s not going to help you drive traffic. How many people are searching in Google for “Raise ‘em ‘Til They Crack”? For your future posts I would suggest trying to target keywords that you see people actually typing into Google so the hard work you put into creating content will pay off with visitors!

3) Put The Keywords In The URL

One of the SEO drawbacks from many blogging platforms is that they don’t put your keywords in the url of the post. For example, your post on Annette Obrestad MTT Strategy Guide is listed as http://jacktenoffsuit.com/homepage/?p=364 instead of http://jacktenoffsuit.com/homepage/Annette-Obrestad-MTT-Strategy-Guide. Having the keywords in the URL will give you a nice SEO boost and there is usually an option in your blogging platform to turn it in. It’s just usually set off by default.

Good luck Aaron!

What Was The Best Thing You’ve Ever Done For Your Website? – Entrepreneur Poll Update (2)

websiteOur most recent poll here at Young Entrepreneur asks you “What was the best thing that you’ve ever done for your website?”

Last week I updated what some of the top replies were:

- Getting a website co-founder
- Using a SEO-friendly blogging platform
- Re-designing / overhauling my blog
- Rewriting website code in compliant XHTML
- Using Twitter
- Outsourcing the website creation
- Moving blog from a free to paid template
- Using StumbleUpon
- Leveraging a social media campaign
- Creating a blog off of my website
- Coming up with a regular blog posting schedule
- Using video and audio for branding purposes

In the past week there has been a new surge of responses which include:
- Testing my site traffic and redesigning my site based on the result.
- Got #1 on Google for 3 of target keywords.
- Built a social network of almost 350 podcasters from 16 countries at PodcasterWhosWho.com.
- Google Adwords
- I re-established my site, which used to be primarily content based, to have a social networking aspect to it. This made the user feel as though they are more in tuned with the site and usability went up drastically.
- Content is king, and I’m not saying that because I have a company that writes content for sites. It is BECAUSE content is so important that I started one.
- Posting articles/blogging seems to be working for the sites I run. After that always making sure SEO is good and trying to garner some good backlinks from other related websites
- best thing I did was provide content people wanted to read.
- The other big thing is to utilize facebook heavily if you are targeting a young crowd. They love it.
This is your last chance to have your say before I compile the complete list! Please share what has worked for you so that other young entrepreneurs can learn from your success. To leave your advice just comment below!
Stay tuned next week for the results!

SEO Advice – Adventure Mopeds

It’s time for another SEO Advice post! Last month, I offered free SEO advice to FreshPow!. I’m going to continue my SEO Advice series today by helping out another YoungEntrepreneur.com blog reader, Shawn Miller from Adventure Mopeds.

Shawn Miller – http://www.adventureislandcompany.com

I would like to get your thoughts on my website:

www.adventureislandcompany.com

Thank you,

Shawn Miller
Adventure Mopeds
My Recommendations

1) Pick Your Keywords

If you want to rank in Google you have to be strategic about the different keywords that you’re trying to target. As an example, for your business you might want to go after “Florida Moped Rentals” or “Pensacola Moped Rentals.” What keywords would help bring in qualified traffic for you? A good start might be to look at what keywords people are already using to find your website and if you think those are high quality keywords or not. Identifying the best keywords is definitely the first step in any SEO strategy.

2) Use Your Title Tags

The title tag on your homepage is the part in blue above where it says http://www.adventureislandcompany.com. That’s one of the most important elements that Google factors in and it’s great because most of your readers won’t even read up there (unless they are in the SEO industry of course!). You should put your keywords up in that title tag. Right now you have “Adventure Mopeds” which is great but is that really a good keyword for you? Use your targeted keywords that will help drive in more traffic for your site!

3) 300 Words of Content

Google loves content and, as the expression goes, “content is king.” You want to make sure that you have at least 300 words of content on each page that you want to rank in Google’s index. Your homepage really only has one paragraph of text so you need to beef up your descriptions! Pictures are great to help sell your service, especially in an industry like yours, but Google wants to see text so make sure to put at least 300 words on the homepage and every page on your site so you can increase your odds of ranking and bringing in new customers.

Good luck Shawn!
