Recycling. As a small business owner I would recommend it as a safe investment with plenty of potential. There will always be demand for scrap metals. You control your own gross profit margins and the Markets whether up or down have little to no effect on your profitability. A recession in fact may even boost your business as the average consumer is seeking alterior methods of supplementing their income and recycling otherwise useless material for quick cash is very simple and sensible.

I see many people building websites and the most important thing to consider before jumping in to the deep end is "How much value are you going to get from your investment in the website".

Any one who knows their stuff will be able to demonstrate value before starting a project.

i think it depends on the funds you have to invest so if you have low funds you will be better off starting a small business in your city. but if you have allot of money to invest i suggest maybe a franchise like mcdonalds in an area where one is needed or any other franchise

just remember

learn your product
location location location
and invest wisely and have a good business plan

I think that when times are tough people to startup an online business because, as long as they have the know-how to start it up, it will cost little (virtually nothing). Starting up a business that sells physical goods or services, on the other hand, takes much more investment in terms of money.

You have to take your passion, what drives you. I took my hobbie, and played around with it. Then in about 6 months took it to the next level. I have been in business going on 7 years. I love what I do. My husband was able to quit his job in Jan. 2010 and help me with the business. Who quits a job?? Well he did because I was making more than him each month and we really only needed one income. So I suggest taking your hobbie and turning it into a business. Say you like to build model cars. Not all of us can do that, but they are great gifts. If food is something your wanting to sell, do gift baskets, or candy baskets. If you can sew, then make things we can't. The resources are out there. It took about 2000.00 to start up what I do..... although I did not take 2000.00 out of my pocket and put it into the business. It took time. I sold things online at auction places and got enough money to slowly start the business. I have anywhere between 700 and 900 customers visit the site everyday. Go with what you love to do... it is going to be your business and you have to love what you do!!!!
