Time management is incredibly important to any business and can be the difference between making it long term or going out of business quickly. I work with small business computer consultants , and I know this is a major challenge for them, particularly those that are starting their own businesses. In any professional services industry, time becomes money, and especially if you are working solo (as many small business computer consultants are) or with a very small staff, you need to watch very carefully where your time goes. The thing I recommend the most is to take a few weeks to diligently track where your time goes. This can be done in a simple spreadsheet by just setting up some categories (for example, "billable hours," "research and development," "administrative," "training," "marketing," etc.). It becomes really obvious after doing this for just a couple weeks where your time is being wasted and where you need to invest more. Even just the process of writing everything down is essential to getting a realistic picture of how you can better manage your time and is fairly simple to do!

[...] August 11, 2008 I just completed reviewing How To Manage Your Time and it included a list of great time management tips. All very valuable. What hit me the most was the last one: Closed door / open door. While we all try to keep an open door policy, it is important to have a closed door most of the time, at least physically. That way you can get the work done, and it shows that you are busy, working, being productive. Open the door when it is a good time - perhaps even schedule it (privately) — that is to set some times in your outlook calendar to remind you to open the door, but don’t let anyone know about that schedule, otherwise they’ll begin to count on it. But to make yourself available does not mean that you always need to be available. Posted by techrat95 Filed in Uncategorized [...]
