Budgets are obviously really important to any business plan. I think one of the biggest mistakes people make is not writing down their budget – or a formal business plan – in the early stages of their businesses. Not writing your budget and business plan down on paper can cause many different problems, including over-confidence in being able to achieve your business goals (because you are not continuously looking at the big picture) and the opposite, under-confidence in your ability to build your business because you have an unreasonable notion of what it’s going to take financially. This information is really helpful, since a lot of the problem with creating a budget is being overwhelmed and not knowing where to start or what to track.

I tend to say...do the budget then, whatever your funding requirement is, double it as people never raise enough money and then get in trouble as a result later!
